Evaluation

How does your work fit in with a wider project?

The project I pick up is a local community project. It connects to other local communities a lot. Like 'Stepping The Tinner's Way'. Lots of people bring their old footage of their family or Cornwall to Barbara Santi (my client) to dight them to DVD, then local film maker use them to create different films to show on the 'Cornwall Film Festival'. I am a member of them.

What have your practitioners worked on before?

Barbara is a documentary film maker who using digital technology for social change. She used to made documentary films for Channel 4 and Carlton TV and has shown her films on FourDocs, Current TV, The Community Channel, art galleries, conferences, film festival platforms and rural touring film screenings. Primarily interested in directing/camera she has astute skills in getting projects funded and providing producer/funding consultation within the media sector.

Barbara is also a social media educator both with young people and community groups having worked extensively regionally and internationally. She is interested in empowering people through the use of digital technology (video and photography) so ordinary people can tell their own stories.
Barbara's first professional job was at Working Title Films in London - then followed a number of freelance posts in companies such as BBC. copyright

Here is a link about the copyright in the UK.
I found I got a problem to use the music legally.

I have been tried to recreat the music, but when Barbara Santi came on Monday,

12 七月 2010

Ohh...New Problem !!!

I find out I am not allow to use the music I already found. I have to get the permission of the owner first. I am in a panic... I met Barbara Santi today, she cut 30% of my video away, because she said I don't really need them that much. Carry on talk about the COPYRIGHT!
This is a major. I didn't realise I will get in trouble of the background music. This was my fault. What I know about, I am only allow to spend £15 on the background music. Well, I think it will not be enough to pay for it (The song is called good bye policeman, click me ). So I am starting to do the research again for background music. I am focusing on the classical music, because most of the song writers dead 100years ago.
Right, I will solve it out.

The copyright issue is the most difficult part for my project I think. I have to use material very carefully,to make sure there isn't any trouble will follow by. The backgound music I've choose it shown perfectly of the emotion I actually want.

Interacting with Barbara Santi

Barbara Santi came in a couple of weeks ago to help me with my project and see how is it going. She also gave me some tips on where to find footage, what shots I could use to improve the look and feel of the film to enhance the story and some other things.
She is also coming in tomorrow to see the final project and any improvements I could make.
I haven't talked to her lots of times but I think I've communicated with her enough times in order to achieve what I would like.

Unfortunately I have found out that she couldn't make her appointment she had today so she is coming in on Monday instead. I'm hoping by this point I can show her the completely finished product and gain some very valuable feedback. Then hopefully she will like our product enough to show it at the Cornwall film festival and maybe other venues round Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. She might also like to use it for further promoting meetings or shows.

Where Am I

I have filmed my footage almost of it. I just need to film some streets and other shots of Graham with the ambulance service. but I am not really sure do I really need it.
In final cut I've started to layout the footage according to the story boards. I still have to add the rest of footage to do, and find out the background music(I have done a section of music in it though) and some minor effects and transitions have to add in.
I think I am about half way through making my product and also I have to evaluate this project, because Daniella she left...

A New Problem Comes

I was working with Daniella in The Tre Project as a team, but she left the course and college. So I am going to finish this project by myself.  Things became even harder, I hope I will be fine for it.

Where Am I

At the moment I've started the storyboards and finished the planning work, I am going to film, edit and Daniella evaluates. There is still quite a lot to do but I think we will be able to finish it.

I found a documentary on TV which is now on BBC player which is in the similar style that I am looking at but a slightly different story:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sv2ry/A_Century_of_Fatherhood_The_Good_Father/
It is a story based on fatherhood using archive footage and images.

SWOT Analysis

Strengths
  • The project has already started. We can have it as an example
  • Work with a good partner, who is a professional film maker
  • Awen offers a lot of information to us that covers our project
  • Get a chance to understand Cornwall's local society
  • Increase our knowledge in history and culture
I've been done some of the research for Barbara Santi, who is a professional film maker and have been made many documentary films already. She can be a helpful person for our work. The project has already started. I could found lots of information when I do the research. Barbara brought in lots of the material. So I've got plenty of the footage to pick up. Some of the Cornwall history I never hear before, because this project I know more than before. For example What was it happened about the Penlee lifeboat. How the lifeboat works...balabala

Weaknesses
  • Time consuming
  • Capturing and editing footage
  • Relying on a busy partner
I've rushed on time, I didn't manage the time very well.  Not very good at using the editing equipments. Spend more time to learn how to get the effect I want. The information always comes from our client. I've never try to ask for something, just like to wait for.

Opportunities
  • Possible work experience
  • Possible entry to university
  • Career possibility if someone spots it
  • The product could get entered into Cornwall Film Festival
  • Work with a local film maker
  • Begin to be professional in making film
For this project I've got lots of chance to get involve with a good partner, and get my work to show to public. To get more audience feedback. It will be very helpful for after applying UCAS. It looks good at the CV.
    Threats
    • The archive footage arrives late
    • Deadline of the project
    • Legal issues i.e. people being filmed in public
    • Copyright issues
Didn't realise the footage came very late.  When the footage comes, I only got a month left to finish my work. Everything start be rush. The biggest threat is the copyright issues. I pick up a good song but not allow to use in my film. It sounds very gloomy. i tried to recreate the song, then add some solo bit, but the answer still the same. My client Barbara says, it has covered by copyright...

A of the Place I am Going to Film

Graham was actually born in Penzance.  He was born in a house which is in the morrab road penzance.

      11 六月 2010

      Ideas for filming

Start with old footage. Telling stories of Graham of when he was younger then go into interview with maybe a few pictures of his old home. All of what we are going to do has been wrote up into a storyboard format. I am also going to do a voice over of my voice to narrate pieces of Graham's stories.

Research Possible Partner--- The Trenwainton Gardens

03/02/2010. We went to the Trenwainton Garden  to do the primary research. It was raining. Everyone has got wet except me. I had my coat on^^. Although it was bad day to go but we had a special felling about the garden in the rain.

      Research for possible partners

      Trengwainton Gardens (National Trust)

I’ve been visited Trengwainton Gardens twice, and I found it was a good place to go and had fun. On the 3rd February 2010 we went to Trenwainton Garden to do the primary research. It was raining. Everyone has got wet except me. Although it was bad day to go but we had a special felling about the garden in the rain. Unfortunately I lost all of photos I took for my primary research. The gardener of Trengwainton Garden set up an aim for us to done. Make a poster for ‘Wet Nose Day’. I’ve done it quite well. For my interact project, I don’t think I would like to work with as my possible partner. There are a few reasons for it.

1, It is a good project to choose, but it’s rang has amount of limit. What I feel about is its target audience almost focus on tourist. It doesn’t connect to the local people very much. I guess people think it as a beautiful garden but not a useful garden.

2, It is a good project but I don't interested. I don't really get what they would like me to do. It just sounds complicate.

      Research Possible Partners---The Tinners Way

Our tutor introduced a possible partner for us, The Tinners Way. They are a local community which is sponsored by lottery heritage. We met them in the college in a lesson on Friday. We watched the video they've made by last year for their project.  From the video I known they have been work with local community a lot and have a good relationship with local schools and villages as well. Their project 'The Tinners Way Walk' is basically walking around the old mining area. Aiming moneys for charities.
What I would like to do for it, record the journey of people walk on tinners way. I am afraid to walk 10miles. That is the main reason I won't choose the tinners way.
If I join in the tinners way, it will improve my photography skill also the writing skill.

      Tre Project's Proposal

      Title: The Tre Project
Production Start Date: Monday 19th April
Production Crew: Daniella Griffiths and Biyan Li
      Production Company: Awen Productions
Detailed Description: We are going to make a film on the idea of home. We are going to make a film about Biyan’s Step Dad’s opinion of home. We will try and relate the places of how they were then to now by using footage and quick photographs. We will collect some archive footage and film a new interview of Biyan’s dad perception of home and all his memories. This film will be a documentary. We are going to make our own music in logic pro. We will keep it to the style of the footage at that particular time of the footage that’s showing or the storyline. Most of the story will be a voice over by Biyan’s dad but there will be a few clips of the interview. We are going to get some archive footage of some streets in Cornwall according to peoples stories. If we cannot get archive footage we will film the current location and put a filter on it to make it look old and we will do the same effect on photographs that we take. We will film modern footage of the areas that we have of old footage and places that bring memories to people we gather stories from. We will gather stories of Cornwall from people by using an mp3 recorder. The film will allow an insight into how the culture and place has changed. We might use the effect of looking at an image in an old Cornish book then it transforms into footage. We might make a short narrative about the idea above with the drama students based on old story of Cornwall and adapt it to our view of home either through the area or the topic of that story.

Target Audience: Our target audience is probably aimed at 40 - 80 year olds as they love looking back to their younger years and remembering what a particular place was like when they were growing up compared to now. Also I think is suited at documentary lovers as this is going to be a documentary style.

      An Idea for Tre Project

I had a idea for the Tre Project.  We should film the present streets and show it in a black and white effect as the 1920s style for film. Then suddenly change it back to present. I think in that moment, I will get a feeling like it seemed like another lifetime. For example, it can be film in a street. Then in the background, a person are telling a history of the street.

      Targets 17/May/2010

      By the end of today,,
      • Do the blogs about the visiting speakers+ Treguniton garden.
      • Decide on footage you want from Tre Project
      • Find picture for what's on guide.
By the end of the week,
      • Write a blog entry about all of the trips.
      • Research Tre Project.

      Find out my aim

Yesterday, we talked about the tre project and artists which work on the theme of home. We started at two words Cornwall & Home. I've got some idea for the project I am going to do.
I would like to interview my stepfather Graham, because he is a real Cornish and lives in Cornwall almost all his life. He can be the right person to talk about the Cornwall and what does home meas to him.

researh for possible partner-----The tre project

      what is Awen?
awen is a media production social enterprise based in West Cornwall.
The ethos at the heart of awen productions is the creative use of digital media as a tool for positive social change.
Their work is about inspiring and empowering communities by telling stories.

awen is the Kernewek (Cornish language) word for inspiration/muse.
They operate with a "more-than-profit" ethos, which means all profits are routed directly back into community projects we're developing. The CIC format enables us to stay close both to the management and delivery of awen's projects.
The Tre Project is the project I would to do. It is interesting, great fun and mystery. It will be improve my research skill and filming skill. I would like to find out the story of the past and get in to know how did it happened.

      Interaction

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/theobserver/new-review

      find {Why street photography is facing a moment of truth}

It's like a bull in a china shop.(bull is mad, you cannot break anything in the china shop.(牛在陶瓷店,意思是不适合在那个地方。 因为会带来某种毁灭!)

Today, I started to look at street photography. It was famous in 60s & 70s. It shows the fact of life. but now it has been much difficult to take a street photograph. When they want to take a picture, they have to care about people's privacy, terrorism, paedophilia, intrusion, surveillance etc. There are so many rules!

The photographer notices that young couple had chosen to stand apart and look in separate window. While the old couple were arm in arm walked through the middle of them. I think that is a great picture to show the real life. Because People fall in love easily but separate easily also. It is not easy to grow old togerther.

      This picture I found on
Its name called Isolation(1. 隔离, 与世隔绝;隔离状态2. 孤独;孤立状态). In the picture the guy stand in street looking at something. People keep past him. He looks really lonely and confused.
